We're in a new town, Shengcun, created as a government center and smack within the UNESCO area. Bravo! Ever read Chinese Shadows, by Simon Leys? He went after Mao, the landscape barbarian. Both Leys (a pseudonym) and Mao are dead, but the barbarism carries on.

Here's Xinjie, the old county seat, uphill and on the same elevation as the Hani villages. It's ghostly not only because of the fog but because the authorities a decade ago moved the county seat down to the banks of the Red River, a much hotter but more accessible location. Most of Xinjie's residents moved down there, though they still come up here from time to time, especially in the heat of summer.

[2024 update: the building has been sinicized. The dome is gone, replaced by a two-tiered roof with swept-up corners. The minarets have been thickened and layered like pagodas. For "before" and "after" photos, see "Last major Arabic-style mosque in China loses its domes," by Amy Hawkins and Elena Morresi, in The Guardian, 25 May 2024.]
